On Thursday, the University of Southern California and
Arizona State University duked it out in a high scoring, overtime affair that
was ultimately won by the Sun Devils. After ASU’s less-than-stellar performance
against the University of Arizona last week, the Devils were able to bounce
back and score 98 points against USC. ASU now stands at 15-4 overall, with 4
wins and 2 losses in the Pac-12 conference, compared to USC’s 8-12 record, with
3 wins and 4 losses in conference.
Throughout
the entire game, ASU effectively controlled the floor with shots being made
from the entire team. Jahii Carson and Evan Gordon combined for 49 points, and
Carrick Felix also bounced back from his awful game against U of A by scoring
16 points and picking up 10 rebounds against the Trojans. The Sun Devils also
had a great performance coming off of the bench from senior center Ruslan
Pateev, who provided a key 8 points to the overall ASU win. The game was quite
the shootout, but ASU was able to hold on through the onslaught of USC
three-pointers.
Speaking of
USC three-pointers, the Trojan’s were able to drop 15 of their 28 attempted
three pointers. J.T. Terrell and Jio Fontan both had 5 three-pointers and combined
for 45 points. Had Fontan not shot a miracle, last-second three at the end of
the second half, USC would have had a loss much sooner than overtime. The
Trojans also saw an excellent rebound game from senior forward Eric Wise as he
grabbed the ball off the glass 10 times. Overall, the Trojans did not play a poor
game on the offensive front; however they were outplayed by ASU in overtime,
leading to a tough loss on the road.
After this
win, the Sun Devils will be looking for another win in conference against the
16-4 UCLA Bruins. The Bruins will be heading to Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe as
the Devils hope to have the advantage at home.
